It’s that time of year again! The back-to-school period can be stressful and expensive for parents. But don’t worry! We have searched the internet far and wide and compiled some of our favourite back-to-school tips and tricks for parents to make this September’s transition back to the classroom as smooth as possible.

Make Use of Engage Cashback

According to a statista report, the average cost of school items stands at £191 per pupil. However, this doesn’t need to be the case! When shopping for your school supplies, make sure you check out our Engage Cashback reward partners. Save money at retailers such as ASDA, Clarks, Nike, Footlocker and many more when using your Engage card online or instore.

Take Inventory

Just because it’s a new school year doesn’t mean every back-to-school item needs to be brand new. Take some time to take inventory and really consider what you need vs. what you don’t need. Then you can budget accordingly.

Planning Ahead

Whether it’s school trips, swimming lessons or simply buying your child a new pair of shoes, these are all things that can be planned for. Try putting some money aside every month so when the time comes, you’ll have the money on hand. If you’re struggling to budget, our Engage Envelopes facility can help you put money aside and save for these important dates, or can be used to send money back to your Credit Union.

Buy Items in Bulk

Items such as stationary can often be cheaper when bought in bulk and certain retailers have fantastic deals around the back-to-school period. Perhaps, talk to neighbours, friends or co-workers and see if you can put some money together to make a bulk purchase and divide the items amongst yourselves and maximise your savings.

Consider Second-Hand

Some schools have second-hand clothes sales through their PTAs, so contact your school and see if there is one available. Not only will this help you save costs, but it’s also sustainable! Saving money and spending it on a good cause is a no brainer!

Check Out The Supermarkets

If it’s not mandatory to have school uniforms with logos, then why not check out the supermarkets! Major retailers often sell school uniforms or school items at very affordable rates, so why not make the most of them!
